Developing and Deploying Apps, Mobile Experiences and Cardboard VR via the Google Cultural Institute

During this workshop we will explore the tools offered by the Google Cultural Institute (CI) that allow you to rapidly create and deploy web, kiosk, mobile, App (Android and iOS) and VR experiences. Experiences can include images, text, audio, YouTube videos, Google Street Views and Photo Spheres, all combined and organized in a drag-and-drop interface. The CI ( is available to Cultural Institutions around the world and currently has over 750 participating organizations, all of which maintain complete control and ownership over the assets they manage and deploy via the CI. When an Institution chooses to make particular items available globally within the CI, other institutions, as well as visitors, are able to use those items in their own CI exhibits, unleashing objects from around the world for creative remixing and reinterpretation, while ultimately retaining the metadata and credit of the original contributor.

The content we are currently creating with the CI tools will begin to be released to the public in June, after the Google I/O conference, so there is currently no publicly available content. We will be releasing all of the aforementioned experiences, including audio tours and VR experiences this summer. The content we will most reference is that being developed in conjunction with the Freer and Sackler Galleries of Asian Art, including a two continent/three city tour of the history of Whistler's Peacock Room, and Temple Sculpture of Southeast Asia. We will use the Google Cultural Institute Web tools, which can only be accessed by registered users.
